The little red car that Milan created and then painted into a book with us is driving into classrooms this week.

Bindi Su revved up and showed up at St Thomas Boys School and it was a good place to be. A classroom full of boys were delighted to find a car in a book and one who does not stop. Now, this was new.

We spoke about why she might not want to stop and my romantic mind always imagines responses about the scenery, about wanting to take in the sights on one long road trip.. but no, the boys had ideas of their own.

Bindi Su has no brakes , said one and it was the most original response we have received to this book. No brakes led to a stream of conversations about accidents and running over snakes and never stopping.

Bindi Su will stop when she runs out of fuel. This was the response across two grades and I imagine the little ones have experienced the possibility of ‘petrol na’. In a village in Goa, with the nearest fuelling station at least 7 kms away, ‘petrol na’ can be a daunting thing, but for Bindi Su it might have finally allowed her to stop. Did she ? Will she?

Why won’t she ?

Bindi Su drives on and with her our imagination and our ability to read gets boosted. Go Bindi Su!
