Bookworm’s New Community Centre in Saligao
Bookworm, a library based organisation completes 17 years this year. To commemorate this, a new community centre is opening in Saligao, on the 17th of September, 2022. The Vinay & Jean Kalgutkar Community Centre is named after benefactors Jean and Vinay Kalgutkar who have offered Bookworm the use of their house to Bookworm and in doing so extended their deep commitment to social justice and education.
The centre is envisioned as a community space for reading, art and related engagement. The opening of the centre will launch an art exhibition showcasing the artwork of over 70 children from Bookworm’s varied community sites in Goa as well as the work of children with collaborating NGOs outside Goa.
Author Jerry Pinto, who has enabled Bookworm’s Mehlli Gobhai visual Arts Fund, will be present for the inauguration.
A collaborative art mural led by artist Isa Flores and Sanika Dhakepalkar with the children of Mudda Waddo Saligoa will also be opened on this day.
The hope for this centre is for it to be an open space with community engagement in visual arts, library and learning activities, and discourse.
