As we prepared for Saturday’s preschool we were in for an overwhelming surprise. We were reading Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? Dr. Seuss’s Book of Wonderful Noises! which is a children’s book written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Dr. Seuss and published by Random House in 1970. Mr. Brown Can Moo is an incredible book about different sounds. It uses the principle of onomatopoeia which is a word that phonetically imitates, resembles or suggests the source of the sound that it describes.

We first sang a song about animal sounds with a cow, dog, cat and duck. The children imitated the movements of the animals as we sang along. We finished reading the story with much animation and a lot of excitement. We played a puppet game where each child chose a puppet from the bag and then first identify the animal and then try to imitate the sound of the animal. The first few children were a little hesitant I felt but as we moved ahead children found others with the same animal and then they would make the sound of the animal together. All of us had lots of fun.

The best part of the day was when we prepared the snack. We had apple and banana pieces and some cream wafers. Initially many of the children said they did not want to eat apples and most said they did not like to eat bananas. I waited patiently for the children to put together the snack step by step. As they put the last piece together they realized it was a bus! The banana pieces were the wheels and the apples bits were the windows on the wafer body of the bus. Suddenly there was so much joy in eating apples and bananas! One boy pointed out and said to me, “Look Teacher, I am eating the wheel of the bus!” One told me, “I got so many windows. I can eat the windows.”

As we went to watch the animated version of the film after the snack break, the room seemed to have shrunk. There was just about enough space for everyone to fit in so I started counting the children. To my surprise we had 34! From 15 to then 25 we now had 34! This was as big as the preschool session had been since its very inception!
