The Rabbit Problem

The problem all started when we were oohing and aahing over yet another Emily Gravett book at Bookworm.

Emily Gravett is a crafty illustrator and writer. I know now she is crafty in how she presents problems to readers in delightfully creative ways and she is crafty in her skill as a fine thinker , writer and illustrator.

So The Rabbit Problem was purchased on a book buying spree in Delhi by Chetna, Elaine and myself. We got a host of Emily G books, all loved and none presenting any problem to our minds, but for the perennial one of how do we share the book at Bookworm and ensure that books come back to us !

Chetna and I were drooling over the detail and style and every page in The Rabbit Problem which  is full of humour, wonderful flaps, cards, a calendar with a pin up hole, a newsletter and so many many more tactile elements and we enjoyed The Rabbit Problem quite thoroughly or so we thought.

I am humbled and not the tad bit ashamed to say that I did not connect Fibonnaci to this book. And so I took the book home to share and my 13 year old son Riz had a Eureka moment. He delighted in connecting how Emily G uses the Fibonnaci sequence as a spring board to The Rabbit Problem and spent nearly 45 minutes explaining the sequence, the pattern and all the details and facts that add to better understanding about the Fibonnaci Field.

I delighted. We scheduled a booktalk at Bookworm and a visiting colleague Jeevan Mendonsa was present and he and Riz helped all of us get multiple perspectives on Fibonnaci, books, philosophy and life.

I know I will never see the Fibonnaci sequence as merely a pattern of numbers, or phi as another greek alphabet again, but every time I see a 5 petal flower or a 13 petal wild rose I will be fibbin in my mind and it all began with a crafty children’s book – The Rabbit Problem.
